What You Must Know Before You Start A Blog
So, you think you want to write a blog?
I think you’re right! Blogging is my passion, and I believe in it wholeheartedly! I know there’s room for everyone to succeed at this too!
It’s not always easy. Sometimes the amount of advice out there is overwhelming! That’s why it’s so important to have a great guide. One of the first things I did when I started blogging was to invest in an excellent guide.
I didn’t waste time hopping around from article to article hoping the sum of all the parts would be the right direction for me.
No, I followed a PROVEN, step-by-step system to teach me the ins and outs of starting a blog, and I highly recommend that to anyone else. I started with Ruth Soukup’s book How to Blog for Profit without Selling Your Soul and realized that this woman knew what she was talking about! And… I didn’t!
Reading through the book, I realized I needed WAY more guidance. That’s why I invested in Elite Blog Academy. Best decision ever. Ruth’s course is jam-packed with information, AND the guidance of the other EBA Bloggers is invaluable!
It’s worth every penny! But, you can get Ruth’s advice FREE in Blogging Made Simple coming out February 21st!
But this post isn’t just a plug for EBA. That’s the BEST course to take to get started on the path to having a top-notch, profitable blog, but BEFORE you even begin blogging…
or before you publish another post…
You MUST know these 6 Things Before You Start a Blog
I always say the secret to life, and a great blog is: It’s Not About You. True, your readers come to see what they can get from your blog, but they also come for your unique voice and the things you have to offer.
There are two important tests I think you should take before starting any online business.
1- A Personality Test
Who are you? Who did God create you to be? What are your natural strengths and abilities? Why can you never seem to follow a schedule, or why do you get so bent out of shape about running late? Understanding the nature of your personality will show you what you need to bring to the blog…and what you might need to get help with.

2-Your Archetype Assessment
Your archetype is a description of the role you were meant to fill. It took me a long time to accept this about myself. The role I wanted to fill was as a wise, calm, loving teacher…the archetype of the Sage Romantic (sage being wise, romantic is relational).
But that’s not me. I’m actually an Alchemist Creative. That means I see the possibilities in the world and come up with creative solutions and ideas! I don’t know how I missed it for so long, but I wanted so badly to be a different role that I missed filling my place. The world needs Sage Romantics, and Nurturers, Rulers, Jesters, etc…and it also needs Alchemist Creatives.

Know Your Passions
As you begin dreaming about the content of your blog, don’t try to pick things you think are popular or will draw a lot of attention. Think about YOU! What are your passions? What are the things you love to talk about?
When I was in middle school, we had a section in our Memory Book (like a Year Book) that was called “Wind Ups”. The format was this:
Wind Up _______ and she will _______. Your friends would submit funny things to the editor for them to publish about you. “Wind up Christina, and she’ll tell you all about the book she just read.”
It’s true! I love learning new things and sharing them with others! I also love entreprenuership, and parties, and the Bible, and organizing… Get the picture? After I thought about my “wind ups” I knew those would be the best categories for my blog. I dropped all the other categories and features that weren’t things I got excited about.
Know Your Expertise
Along the same lines, what are the things your friends ask you about? These may or may not be things you get excited about. Think carefully about whether this is a category you want to include in your blog, but pay special attention to it! Are you the stylish friend? The one who knows the best recipes? What do they ask you about!
For too long, I ignored what my friends actually asked me about and thought about what I wanted the world to know. And oddly, I even wrote on topics I knew I needed help with! I guess I thought I could find the answers and share them with you.
As a blogger, you are going to be most influential when you share the things you’re already good at, the stuff you already know! If you’re the world’s foremost expert on organizing cotton balls, write about it!
