One of the best ways to make money at home is with a network marketing business. These companies allow you to buy your own business at a low entry fee. You make money by selling directly to the customers and training a team to make money too.
I’ve been involved in several network marketing businesses, also called MLM (multi-level marketing) and Direct Sales over the years. I’m not currently working any network marketing businesses, but since my passion is to help women earn money while staying home with their kids, I want to introduce you to several MLM companies in an unusual way.
Instead of highlighting key things in the company’s website, I wanted to sit down with real life consultants and hear from them what they love–and what’s not so lovely–about their network marketing business.
Today’s interview is with Rachel of Initial Outfitters!
In the video (pardon the poor sound quality, I had to use a different computer than usual), she shares what makes her company awesome and the key to success in any MLM business. In the video, she also shows us some of her amazing products. The video does have different content that the written interview so check out both!
Hi, thanks for having me!
Happy to have you! Tell us a little about yourself and your family and your business.
I have 3 children, ages 11, 6, 9. I’ve been with Initial Outfitters for 5 months. I love that I’m able to plan around our family schedule to work my Initial Outfitters business. Also I only schedule parties when my husband is home, so I don’t have to pay for childcare.
That’s one of the best things about running a business like this as a mom. Tell us about the company.
Initial Outfitters started 10 years ago. They just celebrated their anniversary this past August. We are a boutique line of jewelry, bags, clothing, home decor and gifts. Your style, made simple. Almost all of our items can be personalized or customized in some way.
Neat! How did you decide on this company? Was it the products that interested you first?
Actually, I did an online search for Direct Sales companies and found a website that had about a hundred different companies listed. I started reading about each company and stopped when I got to about #32. It was overwhelming!!
I picked my top 3 and presented them to my husband and from there we prayed to see what God would be leading me to do. Initial Outfitters was the winner!!
So, what’s it like running your business? Are you on your phone all day?
No, I mostly market on Facebook and Instagram. I get training from my upline and team on Facebook as well. I do home parties and I hope to attend our National Conference in August, but right now, I work the business in about 5-10 hours a week. I still have plenty of time for other activities and interests!
What does your compensation plan look like? Are you really making money?
YES! Our compensation plan, like most direct sales, is based on your personal sales and leadership. The higher you go in leadership, the more you make! I promoted in my first month and got a 5% raise! Now, I’m making between $500-$1000 each month which is a great boost to my family for just a “side hustle.”
I get paid at least once a month, but I can get paid more depending on how many parties I have.
Is there anything about this business that frustrates you?
Not enough people know about Initial Outfitters, which is a great thing, actually! But sometimes, it has been hard to get the name out there and have friends and family take the leap of faith to host a party when they aren’t familiar with the product line.
Do you keep an inventory?
Yes, I have some things on hand. I keep them in my garage.
What are your goals with Initial Outfitters?
I want to bump up to the next phase in leadership within the next few months. In the next 2-3 years I would love to let as many people in my area, in East Texas, know about Initial Outfitters.
Great goals! I think it’s wonderful the success you’ve had in just a few months. What advice do you have for anyone who wants to grow an MLM business?
Connection! You’ve got to stay connected to people. Your friends and family are friends and family first, customers second. They will be more interested in your business when you are genuinely interested in them and show them love first.
Rachel, that is some EXCELLENT advice!
Where can people learn more about your company and connect with you?
Thanks so much for sharing your business and your business tips with us! Come back anytime to share more about your journey!
You guys, I love what Rachel said is the key to network marketing. There are so many things that are “the key to network marketing”, but connection is absolutely essential. It’s in the name “network” marketing. You are selling to your network of people. If you alienate or abuse the network by making your connections one sided, people will feel used and unappreciated. They will have no interest in supporting you, no matter how awesome your products are.
Share your business, but share more! Share tips, advice, inspiration, appreciation, affirmation…show them the love they deserve as a person first! Because if your business is only about you, you won’t be in business very long.
Do you have questions for our network marketing mavens? I’ll be doing more interviews in the coming weeks. Drop your Q’s in the comments and I’ll get the A’s for you! 😉
